The Lambert wrestling team is headed off to the state wrestling meet in Macon for the first time in the team’s history.

The Longhorns put up an excellent fight against North in the regional meet, but ended up losing to the young team. However, they defeated West Forsyth 44 to 15, landing in second place overall.

The wrestling team is the strongest it’s ever been, with high-caliber senior athletes such as Matthew Sheetz and Eric Diemert, 2 state runner-ups, and newcomers like Nick Sheetz and Brett Malinowski.

Assistant Coach Tony Barrett said about the triumphs of the team: “Everybody has bought into working hard and giving their best effort, and taking that effort to the mat and approaching the competition with a lot of personality and a lot of attitude. Everybody has bonded as a team and is in it to win it.”

Many coaches from all over the county have commented on the difficulty and competitiveness of the wrestling teams of the county, and the state meet is sure to showcase an impressive array of teams from around Georgia. The Lambert wrestlers travel to Macon on Thursday, January 14, facing Tift County in the first bracket.
