After ending last season with a 25-8 record and a disappointing loss in the state quarterfinals, the Lambert Longhorns baseball team, led by second year head coach Rick Howard, is trying to get off to a fast start in the 2017 season. With a new region alignment and a difficult schedule which includes the likes of state powerhouses Parkview and Lee County as well as an out of state trip to visit Florida’s number one ranked high school Archbishop McCarthy, this year’s team will have to play better than ever before in order to make a run at the school’s second state championship.

In order to do this, Howard has assembled a team with littered with depth in at all positions on the field. In the infield, the Longhorns are lead by returning seniors Josh McAllister (committed to Florida Southwestern with form Lambert coach Jamie Corr) and Will Gabbert. First base will be filled by power hitting senior Griffin Jarrett and the team hopes to receive contributions from other seniors including Harrison LeBlanc, Cameron Smith, and Chris West.

Pitching wise, Lambert is sure to miss last year’s seniors but the club is ready to replace them with seniors Zach Keenan (committed to College of Charleston), Brandon Thomas, Luis Dewendt, Austin Smith, and junior Payton McPherson.

Lambert also has a plethora of young talent on the Varsity level this season including junior catcher Colin Price who showed a knack for power with a home run in a scrimmage with Mill Creek over on February 11th.

Aside from just being Valentine’s Day, Tuesday the 14th also marked the beginning of the regular season for the Longhorns who rode the arms of pitchers Zach Keenan, Luis Dewendt, and Payton McPherson for a 3-0 victory over Marist High School.

Saturday, Lambert took the field against coach Howard’s former home Brookwood High School. Despite the threat of rain, the game was able to get underway after on a brief delay. The Longhorns unfortunately fell to the Broncos in the contest by a final score of 8-1.

The Lambert Longhorns will attempt to get back in the win column today in a game against the Hawks of Mill Creek.
