For most people, arts and literature do not have a time or place in the busy schedule of a highschool student. This is not the case for senior Linzi Huang. Linzi is an author, seven year ballet dancer, and the co-chair of the sports committee at Lambert Student Council.
Huang has been dancing since the age of five, and transitioned to contemporary ballet at 10. She began dancing for fun, but she soon grew to love the sport and enjoyed exploring different styles. For her, it is a calming way to release her thoughts and worries.
“ I get to kind of pour out my emotions into moves that portray stuff that I can’t talk about in everyday life,” Linzi said.
Dance is a major part of Linzi’s life and takes up a lot of her time. Through dance, she has gained valuable time management skills since ballet is a demanding sport. Ballet is one of the hardest forms of art, taking a toll on one’s body and mind. Huang has, like many dancers, suffered from injuries due to ballet. Her time management skills have taught her to have priorities and ground herself.
“It’s kind of like falling to my lowest low and having to climb my way back up,” Huang describes.
Huang has climbed far in the ballet community, with many performances and awards under her belt. This year she placed second for contemporary dance at Youth America Grand Prix.
Dance is not the only form of art Huang is talented in. In her sophomore year, she began channeling her strong thoughts and feelings into poetry as she wrote dozens of poems at a time, all in her Notes app. With all of these poems in her hands, she published a book called “From the Notes App of a Random High School Girl”. The book consists of the ups and downs of a teenage girl’s life. Huang also created an Instagram page to publish her poems called MyLittleNotesApp. She posts a poem every day, each one filled with emotion and meaning.
“It seems like people kind of resonate with my poetry,” Huang said. ”They kind of understand what I might be going through, or my poetry can capture what they’re going through…we’re all so different but we’re also connected by small things.”
Linzi finds pride and comfort when others comment on or repost her poems. Her poetry is often inspired by fictional characters from books or movies and how they are able to express their feelings poetically. She sees the beauty in authors and writers being able to capture pure, raw emotion.
Huang is a talented and insightful student, dedicated to expressing her creativity through dance and poetry. She plans to keep dancing and writing after high school. As she continues to share her art with the world, stories and prose will forever remain a part of her life.
