Whether you are an avid Game of Thrones viewer, a seasoned fiction book enthusiast or a person who consumes social media, you’ve seen the impact of the fantasy genre in our modern world. For some, though, fantasy is more than just a genre, it’s a new adventure.
Dungeons and Dragons (DND) is a tabletop roleplaying game which centers around your character and the quest you embark on. With the help of your allies, you are able to traverse distant lands, battle unimaginable foes and unveil extraordinary loot.
At Lambert, DND is a growing club which participates in campaigns every week. The club is completely student led, and each campaign is run by its own Dungeon Master (DM). The DM takes on the role of game master during an adventure, controlling everything from the plot and setting to rules and spells.
“The Dungeon Master is the person who basically runs the game for the players at the table and decides what will happen,” club advisor Dr. Norton said.
At the beginning of every school year, DND takes pride in helping new and returning members with their character creation. This is the process in which a player is able to choose the race, class and personality of the character they want to campaign as.
DND Club also hosts a “One Shot” at the beginning of every school year to teach the game to new participants.
“We start with what we call a One Shot,” Dr. Norton said. “It’s like a little mini adventure, to sort of show people how the game works.”
As a way to help new players, DND has released many books and guidelines for understanding the game. These books often help DM’s the most, as they give guidelines about adventures, spells and monsters that can be seen during a campaign. At Lambert, dozens of these books are utilized every meeting as a way to keep track of known spells and foes.
For many people, the complexity of DND and its creativity is what draws them to the game.
“Just being able to come up with all these creative solutions, both inside and outside of the roles and being able to roll with the punches no matter what they are, is definitely the best part,” member Levi Phillips said.
DND is a very complex and thrilling game that entices thousands of people around the world. As Lambert’s very own DND club continues on their conquests, the experiences they make and adventures they will pursue will last with them for a lifetime. It’s never too late to try out Dungeons and Dragons!
