Sophomore Dayamayee Ramu Dayalan and dancing have always gone hand in hand. Even before pursuing formal training, waltzing was her primary mode of transportation. Seeing her flair for dance, her parents decided to enroll her in dance classes. At the ripe age of 5, Dayamayee began to pursue a form of Indian Classical dance, known as Bharatanatyam. Her interest and passion for the classical art ignited her curiosity for other forms of contemporary dance styles.
During her freshman year, Dayamayee joined the Agni Dance Team as a way to explore Indian Fusion Dance.
“Agni is Lambert’s Indian Fusion Dance Team where we perform different types of Indian dances including Bollywood, Kollywood, Bhangra, and we also incorporate some classical dances as well,” Ramu Dayalan stated.
Her valuable contributions to the club were recognized as she assumed the role of co-captain during her sophomore year.
“I first heard about Agni when I was in 8th grade,” Ramu Dayalan stated.“I was looking for many different clubs to join. I also knew one of the co-captain’s friends at the time. I just wanted more information about the club, and here I am now!”
Dayamayee encourages all students who are passionate about Indian dance to consider joining Agni. Students who are involved in the club have the opportunity to perform in several local events and competitions. One of Dayamayee’s favorite memories was performing for the 2022-23 DECA talent show.
Despite being a contemporary and fusion dance enthusiast, Dayamayee is very keen on growing her skills in classical dance as well.
“Indian Classical dance is more devotional and structured, which is really different from fusion dance,” Ramu Dayalan explained. “When it comes to Bollywood and other styles, I’m more of a normal human being just thinking from a life’s perspective, rather than from the perspective of a devotee.”
Dance is indeed a significant part of Dayamayee’s identity, but her life looks a lot different when she’s off stage. In addition to Agni, Dayamayee is an active member of FBLA and SGA, hoping to have a successful career in business.
“I want to be an entrepreneur when I grow up,” Ramu Dayalan stated. “My dream school is probably the University of Pennsylvania. It would be incredible to study at the Wharton School of Business.”
For now though, Dayamayee is focusing on having a successful high school career. She is eager to see what Agni will do in the near future and hopes to continue making an impact on Lambert as the “Dancing Queen.”
