It takes a tremendous amount of work in order for a club such as Speech and Debate to grow and succeed. Not only does a club have to recruit new members, it also has to train them for competitions.
The Captain of Speech, Jayden Yu, has helped lead Speech and Debate through its growing popularity.
“My job is to essentially make sure that the competitors for Lambert Speech and Debate, specifically in the speech aspect of it, are gonna get better and go out and win competitions for us,” Yu said.
Speech and Debate members compete against students from other schools, arguing for or against a topic in order to score points and win awards.
In the past, Lambert Speech and Debate had small numbers with some meetings having more officers than regular members. This year, however, the club has exploded with growth.
“We’re seeing dozens of people interested in speech and debate, far exceeding our expectations,” Yu explained.
With new members, it’s important to build bonds to ensure success as a whole unit. Yu states that while the beginning of the year was a developing period, many of the members have incorporated themselves into a wider family.
“We have a better team dynamic that is growing and blossoming every meeting we have,” Yu added.
Coming up, Speech and Debate has multiple competitions, including at Emory and Lassiter.
“I’m looking forward to the future for this club to see how much we can grow in our team dynamic,” Yu said.
The growing world of Speech and Debate is an exciting endeavor at Lambert, and a growing organization is just part of the path to success.
