As the months grow closer to winter and temperatures begin to drop, one fundamental part of our lives returns: blankets. Soft and warm, they are essential for comfort in the cold, but not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to this basic good. So from October second to the eleventh, Lambert’s Family Promise club hosted a blanket drive for families in need. Family Promise is a club addressing homelessness around the country and they provide members with service and volunteer opportunities.
For members of Family Promise, their job was to donate the fabrics and help construct blankets. They worked in Ms. Yi and Ms. Wang’s rooms every day before school and during lunch periods together as a team to tie and create blankets. In total, they made over 30 blankets ranging from one and half to two yards long using thick fleece fabric. Lambert’s Family Promise chapter delivered these blankets to the headquarters of Family Promise, who distributed them to families in need. Hanna Kim. President of Lambert’s Family Promise branch, is very proud of the outcome of the drive.
“We wanted to spread this warmth to people during the holiday season,” she said.
Family Promise also partnered with Lambert’s Key Club, a student-led organization whose goal is to provide service to their community. Together, members brought in the fleece and worked on the blankets. Members had an enjoyable experience, spending time with friends and crafting together.
“Through this drive, we were not only able to meet our goal, but also create a community at Lambert by merging clubs,” Kim said. “We fostered a family as well.”
The members used this drive to bond with each other and make lasting memories.
Freshman Aidan Hwang also helped organize and participate in the drive.
“Key Club was a very big contributor in the blanket drive…many officers came, many people donated, and we created a bunch of blankets,” Hwang said.
The Family Promise and Key Club blanket drive was a huge success for both clubs, and served as a special way to start the holiday season. For the members, it was a great bonding experience and also a gratifying one since they were able to help over 30 families. Members of both clubs are looking forward to volunteering in upcoming drives and cannot wait to see what they accomplish together in the future.
