Every year, Lambert High School holds a Club Rush event for student organizations to display what they have to offer and attract new members. This year, the event was held on August 23 in the gymnasium featuring over 50 clubs and organizations, including clubs focused on academic, sports, creative and competitive interests.
Among the clubs was Lambert RecStem, which focuses on exposing students to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts through activities and meetings.
Andrew Lin, Vice President of Lambert RecSTEM, has noticed improvements in Club Rush in comparison to years past.
“I remember in sophomore year, I went to the library, and I think it was very crowded there,” Lin said.
With Club Rush hosted in the main gym, more clubs were able to participate in a bigger space in comparison to the library, where the event has been previously held. The larger environment could be compared to a convention hall, full of students and clubs interacting in an open space.
Taking place during an advisement period, only freshmen and sophomores were allowed to attend, whereas in previous years all grades would be able to attend during their respective lunch periods.
“It was definitely a good move to require freshmen and sophomores because those are the people that would be more interested in joining clubs rather than a junior or senior,” Lin stated.
With extracurricular activities being a great way to get involved with the community and stand out to colleges, prioritizing underclassmen allowed for clubs to attract prospective members as opposed to upperclassmen, who may already have commitments.
Clubs at Lambert allow students to develop specialized interests and become part of something bigger than themselves. Club Rush’s newest iteration not only puts clubs at the forefront for students but also improves from the past.
