As recent hurricanes have devastated the southeast United States, Lambert Lacrosse is committed to making a difference for those in need. The boys lacrosse team is organizing a hurricane relief drive ahead of a tournament in North Carolina in less than a month.
Areas of North Carolina were hit especially hard by Hurricane Helene, with almost 100 casualties and critical infrastructure such as power and water left devastated. Damage from the hurricane also flooded entire towns and left people without power or shelter. Organizations such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the American Red Cross have been directing disaster relief to help citizens recover and rebuild their communities.
Specific items needed for the drive include food, cleaning supplies, and hygiene products. Lambert Lacrosse is working with Matthew’s United Methodist Church in North Carolina, who will distribute the donated items this upcoming weekend.
This drive is the first of its kind for Lambert Lacrosse, and is something that the team hopes to continue in the future.
“It’s the first time we’ve ever done it,” boy’s lacrosse head coach John Spaide noted.
While this is the first time that the team has been able to take donations to a tournament, the team has also contributed to local communities in the past. One example comes in the form of equipment drives, collecting gently-used equipment to be donated to new programs for young players.
Coach Spaide also noted how the idea didn’t come from just one person, but the team as a whole.
“It’s a great opportunity to give back to a community that was recently affected by a hurricane,” Coach Spaide added.
As communities across the country struggle with natural disasters and the devastation that it brings, student organizations such as Lambert Lacrosse have stepped up to make a difference in the lives of others.
