For the first time, Lambert’s counseling department held a mental health week, bringing awareness to complex issues and providing students with ways to create positive coping mechanisms.
Throughout the week, activities included therapy dogs, guest speakers, raffles, and crafts, all meant to inspire a positive attitude and brighten someone’s day.
“The counselors wanted to celebrate mental health awareness week, because everybody has mental health, we just wanted everybody to remember there are positive aspects of mental health as well,” Lambert Counselor Mrs. Bucherati said.
Counselors want to show students that there’s no stigma towards mental health
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, One in Five adults struggle with mental health issues. It’s beneficial for students to understand why it’s important to lay positive foundations and support personal mental health at an early stage of life.
“The therapy dog program was created to benefit students…we were the first school in Forsyth to have therapy dogs to start bringing therapy dogs, and we see them as a great resource and we like to include them in as many things as possible,” Mrs. Bucherati added.
One of the main highlights of the week was Lambert’s therapy dogs, who were accompanied by puppies from Rucker Dog Training, who also helped construct Lambert’s dog park.
Supporting students’ mental health looks to be a major priority for Lambert this year, hopefully the school’s efforts make a positive impact on its community.
