Lambert’s SkillsUSA club held its annual State Leadership and Skills Conference (SLSC) last week, and it was a huge success for their members. SkillsUSA is a workforce development club where students engage in competitions to hone their professional and technical skills in many different career paths; their SLSC was mainly a success because of higher membership and participation this year.
This year, Lambert SkillsUSA was able to make small strides towards increasing participation ahead of SLSC.
“This year, our member count more than tripled,” SkillsUSA officer and sophomore Kai Holschuh said. “SLSC was mainly a product of all the growth we’ve seen.”
The opportunities for leadership and learning that SkillsUSA offers were critical in attracting more members to the club. The larger member count and participation means that Lambert students will be able to hone their career skills with a larger group and a larger supporting network. In addition, the increased funds as a result means students who join SkillsUSA will be able to utilize more learning opportunities to build their college application and life skills.
“At SLSC, 14 people total won,” Holschuh said. “Last year, we had around two, so that was definitely a highlight.”
The clubs’ officers, including Holschuh, have taken steps since the beginning of the school year to guarantee more success now and for the future. The number of awards is simply a byproduct of the effort put in to increase participation. By showing the awards and achievements of the club, more students will be willing to take advantage of the opportunities of the organization.
Lambert’s SkillsUSA SLSC performance proved to be a learning opportunity and a rewarding end to their fruitful year. Their work throughout the year with bringing in members and growing participation has come together in a successful conference where the chapter received several awards. Building off SLSC this year, Lambert’s SkillsUSA chapter looks to have a bright future with many more successful conferences. Using the funds and attention from this past year, Lambert SkillsUSA is looking to next year with optimism.
