Mockingjay Part 1 Review

Kurt Kunich, Staff Writer

Mockingjay Part 1 is the third film in the Hunger Games Franchise, and the first of a two-part finale. I am a big fan of both the Hunger Games books and movies, but Mockingjay the book was always my least favorite of the trilogy. I went into this movie with low expectations, but Mockingjay actually surprised me. The film picks up where the last movie left off, where Katniss was rescued by the secret District 13. They want Katniss to be a symbol for the rebellion against President Snow’s Capitol. Meanwhile, Peeta is a captive in the Capitol. The performances by the actors were great, particularly Jennifer Lawrence as the film’s lead, Katniss Everdeen. One memorable scene (Spoiler) is Katniss’ singing scene where she sings “Hanging Tree”. All of the minor characters are very entertaining, especially Plutarch (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks). Both characters have great comic relief moments. One minor problem with this movie is that if you are not a Hunger Games fan, you may become bored, because there are not many action scenes. However, if you are a fan of the series, you will definitely enjoy it. Overall, I would rate this movie with an 8.5/10, and definitely recommend it to Hunger Games fans.
