You may ] see them being held in the hallways. On the table of desks. Stocked on the shelves of stores. The Stanley Cups have taken over the water bottle industry. But why did they become so popular all of a sudden? And are they worth the hype?

The Stanley franchise has been around since the late 1800s, but the cups have received popularity recently. Part of the  Quench line, they were released in 2016. Stanley found relative success in the past, but their sales first started spiking upward in 2023.

While these water containers were already known for their top-notch insulation, what drew many to them were their sleek designs and colors. Lambert Senior Nayonikaa was one of the many consumers who purchased a Stanley Cup. She chose a white-colored one that holds 40 ounces.

“It’s really nice for the gym,” Nayonikaa commented. “I liked that. It also has a cup holder mold that fits conveniently in my car.

Not only this but Stanley Cups are considered beneficial for their other features. The water bottles have a large handle that makes them very easy to carry around and are dishwasher safe. They are also more environmentally friendly as they encourage buyers to reuse the cup rather than continuously use plastic bottles.

However, despite having a Stanley Cup herself, Nayonikaa agrees with the consensus of people who believe that the cup is overhyped.

“I don’t think it’s deserved,” Nayonikka said. “It’s not that special.”

The cup has a stark amount of flaws that many can’t overlook. Not only is the cup extremely heavy, but it is also difficult to fit into bags, as the handle prohibits it from fitting into the typical backpack side pockets. Adding to this problem is that the Stanleys are not leakproof to this problem, the Stanleys are not leak proof. When tipped over or held sideways, the contents will leak through the straw hole.  The straws are also a hassle to wash out and are prone to getting dirty as they have no cover. And with all these problems, the Stanley is very pricey, costing 40 dollars.

So, is the cup worth stampedes of buyers flooding shelves for the product? Judging from all the cup’s attributes, probably not. While sleek in design, it is essentially just a water bottle like any other. However, it is important to note that if you would be willing to purchase the Stanley Cup, they are still solid water bottles that will last for a while. What the general public thinks about a product should not sway your purchasing decisions.
