Five Nights At Freddy’s: From Screen to Scream

It’s the season for horror movies and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is a new smash hit that took everyone by surprise. Grossing $78 million in its box office debut and $130 million globally, the movie has already surpassed the global haul of horror films in 2022. Produced by the massive horror film production, Blumhouse, the movie was directed by Emma Tammi and stars Josh Hutcherson as the main character. The video game, “Five Nights at  Freddy’s,” was an independent venture made by Scott Cawthon and  released in August of 2014. The game was quickly picked up by popular YouTubers and reached new heights. In fact, as of 2023, the series has sold over 33.5 million units worldwide. With a total of nine games, multiple spinoffs and even its own book series, the movie is a long awaited addition to the massive franchise. 

“I was really excited to go see the movie, but what I found surprising was how excited the rest of the audience was,” Lambert sophomore Aarya Trivedi said. “I grew up watching my sister play the game so ‘FNAF’ has been a part of my life for a long time. I really enjoyed seeing so many people come together to watch the movie.”

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” has built a large community with people who have been interested in the game for nearly 10 years. The success of this movie is because of those devoted fans who have made going to this movie its own event. Gaining over 89% in the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was loved and it’s not hard to see why. With an in-depth dive into the lore of the video game and special sentimental cameos, the movie caters well to long term fans. 

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” is a love letter to the fans who have been playing, watching and supporting the game for almost 10 years. Scott Cawthon uses the movie as a vessel to express his gratitude for the devoted fans who brought the game to such high levels. The film finds a way to blend this appreciation while maintaining all of the beloved aspects of the game, and most of all the horror. This spooky season, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is a must watch that will leave anyone with a blood curdling experience and a newfound appreciation for the game.
