The Varsity Girls Basketball team made it to the Sweet 16 last year at the state level, and the team hopes to attain even greater heights this season. Since the team has a veteran coach and a highly skilled line-up, Coach Brian Moon is sure that the team is set up for success. Moon has been coaching basketball for almost 40 years, and this will be his fifth year coaching at Lambert. Although the team has lost experienced alumni this year, Moon is confident the team will grow even more this year, filling in the shoes left behind by former seniors. Moon sees ample room for improvement and growth this year.
“We did lose some seniors this year, so we really want to replace that teamwork and chemistry on the court this year,” Moon said. “As a coach, I really want to work on our unity as a team this season because it directly affects how we play.”
The players have been working hard since June for this upcoming season, and Moon thinks that the emphasis on unity will amplify their performance this year.
“In June, they came out and did some teamwork and I think that really helped them,” Moon explained. “Then in the fall, they worked more on their personal skills and did some individual work.”
Kenzie Weyer is a junior on the Varsity Girls team and an All-Region player. She’s a starter on the team this year and has been passionate for basketball since second grade.
“It’s a really fast-paced and reflex-based game, and it’s team-based too so I really just fell in love with it,” Weyer said.
With new members and a new mindset, Weyer also feels that teamwork and trust is crucial for the team and wants to grow relationships with players on the court.
“We need to stay as one person on the court and really pick each other up when we need it,” Weyer explained.
Outside of the team, Weyer has set personal goals for herself for her to improve her skills as a player.
“I want to be more focused this year on the court and not getting too down on myself,” Weyer said.
The team is gearing up for an unforgettable season, and Coach Moon wants nothing more than Longhorn pride displayed at games this year.
“Come out for the whole game and cheer our girls on, that’s what the team needs,” Moon said. The Lambert Girls Basketball team is back — stronger, bigger and better than ever.
