Director Emerald Fennell’s newest film “Saltburn” offers a fresh take on the ties of wealth, authenticity and ego. Currently lighting up local theaters, the film features standout performances. For example, Barry Keoghan leads a stellar portrayal of Oliver Quick, a struggling college student navigating the eccentric world of the Saltburn suburb.
“Keoghan really brings it as Oliver Quick,” said Lambert Senior and film enthusiast Bella Rizzo. “You see these moments where his true self peeks through, and then this wild abandon.. it’s definitely unlike anything I’ve ever seen.”
The narrative unfolds as Quick forms an unlikely bond with the endearing Felix Catton, played by Jacob Elordi. The mysterious Catton family leads the plot points for Quick’s transformative journey.
Rosamund Pike, who plays Mrs.Catton is praised for her characters portrayed grandeur and superficiality. Though not everyone found the unconventional characters particularly charming.
“The characters were definitely intriguing, and the acting was amazing, but I had no idea what any of it meant… Overall it just felt like the movie had no idea what it wanted to be,” said Lambert Alumni Daniela Plate.
Despite such critiques, audience members appreciate the film’s immersive exploration of the impact of a troubled individual on an unsuspecting family. It’s a gripping look at what happens when a troubled soul shakes up a clueless family.
As Saltburn continues its run in local theaters, it stands as a compelling film with strong performances and a rich narrative.
