The Longhorns and the War Eagles line up before the next play in the third quarter of their big rivalry game.

In front of a packed Lambert Stadium on Friday night, the Longhorns football team got revenge over their fierce rivals, South Forysth, by a score of 28-20.

The Longhorns got off to a fast start, scoring on their opening drive via a Richie Kenney touchdown pass to Tyler Gillis. South Forsyth responded with a touchdown of their own by way of a Davis Shanley run, but the extra point attempt sailed past the uprights, leaving the score at 7-6 in favor of the ‘Horns.

After the quick exchange of touchdowns to start off the game, the defenses stepped up and the scoring slowed down considerably, with the next score occurring with five minutes left in the first half as junior kicker Bryce Christensen booted his first of two field goals of the night. The score would stay the same as the teams returned to their respective locker rooms for halftime.

The next big play of the game occurred with nine minutes left in the third quarter when senior defensive back Jaryd Jean-Felix, keeping with the family tradition by wearing jersey #5 this season, blocked a South Forsyth punt and recovered it for a touchdown, which caused the stands to erupt.

The War Eagles would respond quickly with a touchdown of their own before Christensen hit his second field goal of the game to make the score 20-14. That would be the score until Brian Wright ripped off a 78-yard touchdown run, followed by a two-point conversion on a Kenney pass to junior Alex Snyder to extend the Longhorns’ lead to 14 points with seven minutes left in the contest. This would remain the score until South Forsyth scored a meaningless touchdown as time expired, and when the final seconds ticked away, the Lambert students rushed the field in celebration of their team’s victory over a hated rival.
