The modern version of nihilism is not the expected fear and dread of existence. Rather, it manifests as a coping mechanism for young generations in a deteriorating world. As young adults grow and observe a world in which inflation and class divisions persist, many grow cynical and turn away from traditional values of the older generations after viewing the unhappiness of their parents. Coupled with the depreciation of the environment and decline of resources, young adults now turn to optimistic nihilism, where progressing at your own pace through life and enjoying the positive moments while you can is encouraged. This new ideal has created its own culture, and is especially prevalent throughout the internet as new generations embrace the meaninglessness of life.
