The “Out of Darkness” Walk
On March 26th at Forsyth Central High School, The American Suicide Prevention Organization is hosting the “Out of Darkness” walk. The walk is planned to take place at 9 AM. The purpose of the walk is to raise awareness about Suicide and raise money.
The money from the event will be used towards funding the ASPO foundation in research.
The event started with a student at Forsyth Central High reaching out to Coach Church and Dr. Davidson to help promote the walk here. It has extended towards a challenge for the clubs and sports teams to raise some money towards this cause.
While the “Out of Darkness” walk has been hosted numerous times in the past, this is the first year that this event is taking place at our local school. Coach Church hopes that the event will become an annual occurrence,
“To my knowledge this is the first year that they’re doing it, “Coach Church said. “Hopefully it continues.”
As someone who is providing assistance for this event, the topic of suicide hits close to home for Coach Church.
“I actually had two of my good friends take their own lives,” Coach Church commented. “One from High School who passed away while we were in college, and another that I met in college who also took his own life.”
As suicide is still a taboo topic to many people, there are hopes that events like these walks will bring awareness about this topic. There are many who think that suicide should no longer be considered a taboo topic, and hope that allowing suicide to become a more normalized topic will inspire those who are struggling to reach out.
