Recently, a call for the liberation of Britney Spears has made news after the documentary “Framing Britney Spears” aired on February 5, 2021.

The documentary focuses on the trials and tribulations of her career as a pop sensation.

Spears has been under a conservatorship which allows her father to be in control of her finances and her person. A legal conservator is “a person who is chosen by a law court to look after the property of a person who is not able to do this for him- or herself, for example, because of illness”. This action was taken in 2008 while Spears was put on psychiatric hold after struggling with substance abuse and enduring many public breakdowns.

During this time, Britney met with a lawyer who deemed her fit to be free. He has said that she specifically asked for her father not to be her conservator. The court denied her the right to use her own lawyer which resulted in her father gaining conservatorship of her.

The issue with this is that Spears is now 39 and this begs to ask why she is still under the control of her father. Spears has not spoken out about this but it has been reported that Spears refuses to perform while under the conservatorship.

In 2018, a popular podcast called “Britney’s Gram” leaked an anonymous voicemail that stated Spears had been forced into rehab. They shared this on their platform and it blew up, coining the term “Free Britney”.

Since then, many fans and celebrities have spoken out apologizing to Spears for past comments and joining the movement for her freedom. Most recently, stars such as Valerie Bertinelli, Lucy Hale and Andy Cohen have tweeted in support due to “Framing Britney Spears”.

“I feel so bad for Britney, it is horrible what is happening to her,” Sophia Marcigliano, a junior at Lambert, said.

Marcigliano, along with the rest of the world, has been following Spear’s journey. It remains to be seen whether she will be able to escape her conservatorship, but the documentary revealed that she has widespread support in the form of the millions of people who are rooting for her.
