Blessings in a Backpack has worked tirelessly over the years to supply Forsyth County children in need with weekly meals. The organization covers 16 schools in the area and is an integral facet of the local fight against school hunger.
“People often ask me how we keep reaching more and more students each year,” Club Sponsor Mr. Gray said. “The honest truth is that I never say no to a school.”
Students volunteer each Friday morning to help pack food, which feeds over 500 students each weekend across an entire school year.
“In most cases, the meals they get from Blessings is the only meals they’ll get for the weekend,” Mr. Gray added.
The food that gets distributed comes from a variety of sources, including student and parent volunteers as well as other Lambert clubs partnering with the organization. 100 percent of the food collected is put towards feeding students in need.
Blessings in a Backpack also prides itself on the community it fosters. From students coming to help others to those whose lives are affected by food, Blessings in a Backpack brings together people of all ages to help students in need.
“For those who are truly involved with the work we do, Blessings is more than just a club or an organization,” Mr. Gray said. “It’s something we do that I can’t even put words to.”
In the future, Blessings in a Backpack is looking to serve even more students in need across Forsyth County. With the support of students, businesses and the local community, the organization aims to take the next step towards combating the youth hunger crisis.
“Every year, the number of students and schools that ask for our services continues to grow,” Mr. Gray explained. “It’s going to keep growing.”
The group’s efforts are especially noted during the holiday season, where their work is at the forefront of charitable efforts and donations. Blessings in a Backpack is committed to ensuring no student is left behind during this time, relying on donations and internal fundraisers to support students in the wintertime.
Blessings in a Backpack has grown over time to become one of Lambert’s most prominent community service organizations. As its members work towards a brighter future for students facing hunger, the organization’s impact will continue to be a hallmark of Lambert spirit for years to come.
