Is Prom Worth the Money?

Every year, juniors and seniors prepare in excitement for the end of the year prom that Lambert hosts. With promposals, dress shopping and flower shopping, Prom is an event where students empty their pockets in order to look their best. But is it worth the exorbitant amount of money that goes into looking good?

Prom is an extremely formal event, where most students can be seen wearing grand dresses or tuxedos. These dresses can range from tens to hundreds of dollars. For an outfit that can hardly be worn, some may feel that the purchase of these dresses is not worth it.

“I personally shop for new dresses, ” Lambert senior Sravani Kari said. “But I think if you can repurpose an old dress, that’s amazing.”

To add on to the dress, students also put on makeup, paint their nails and style their hair.  While Some students may even take pictures with bouquets and boutonnieres, these purchases can also amount to large sums of money.

“I think it’s worth it,” Kari said. “In the future, when you’re looking back on your high school prom, I want stories and some sort of memory to look back on. And I personally feel like getting your nails done and getting your makeup done is all worth it in the long run for the pictures and the memories that you can make with them.”

Not only this, but there is the added cost of the ticket itself. Lambert Prom tickets were initially $75, then rose to $85 on April 29. While the cost covered food and a photo booth at the event, many felt that it was too expensive.

“I’m okay with spending the $75 to go to the prom to have that experience,” Kari commented. “But yeah, I do think it’s a little expensive. I can see why some people choose not to go.”

Despite the many ways that students can celebrate their prom, there is no correct method to make the most of their experience. Whether it be shopping for new dresses or recycling old looks, it is up to the student to plan out their ideal way to celebrate.
