The return of Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran’s last concert in Atlanta before disappearing for a year.

“Hello all. I am taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while, I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last 5 years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed. To my family and friends, if you love me you will understand me buggering off for a bit, to my fans, the 3rd album is on its way and is the best thing I have made thus far. See you all next autumn, and thank you for being amazing. Ed x

These were the words that shocked the music world and broke the hearts of millions. On December 13, 2015, Ed Sheeran, an English singer songwriter, posted this distressing message on his Instagram and Twitter. For one whole year, the only thing heard from Sheeran was radio silence. Then, on December 13, 2016, Sheeran emerged from his hiding place, and posted a picture of the color blue on his social media platforms.

Ed Sheeran’s tweet that sparked hope for millions awaiting his return.

While the picture thrilled many and assured fans that he was finally returning, no questions were answered as to when his return would be.

However, ringing in the new year, on January 1, Sheeran posted a video of himself waving and holding a sign saying, “new music coming Friday.” This video was followed by multiple teaser videos and a tweet that simply stated “÷”.

Finally, Friday, January 6 arrived, and not one but two new singles were released. “Castle On The Hill” and “Shape Of You” were hits in the matter of days. “Shape Of You” could be heard on multiple radio stations, and it was also featured in a Snapchat filter.

A few days later, Sheeran tweeted a list of all the songs on his upcoming album, along with the release date of the album, March 3rd.

In an interview with iHeartRadio, Sheeran admits that he no longer has a smart phone, but that has not kept him from sharing his new music on social media. Sheeran fans and music listeners have been overjoyed over the return of Sheeran and the arrival of new music, and they continue to wait in anticipation as March 3rd approaches.
