Titled Goodbye Internet, Matthew Patrick, better known as MatPat, released his farewell to YouTube on January 9, 2024.

MatPat gained fame from his video game theories on his channel, The Game Theorists. While he is predominantly known for his Five Nights at Freddy’s theories, he also runs three other channels: The Food Theorists, The Film Theorists and The Style Theorists.

On March 9, 2024, he will be releasing his final video for his channel called “MatPat’s Final Theory.” Before this video, he will be releasing ten more theories as a countdown.

Despite his gratefulness and love for the channel, he said that he needed to take a step back and enjoy his life. For the majority of his time running the channel, he has put work first before anything else. MatPat says that while working, he could no longer enjoy games without thinking about how to create them into content. As such, he has decided to hand off each of his channels to new people respectively.

Even so, many students at Lambert who have grown up watching him are saddened by the news. While they may not watch him as actively as they once did, he was a key part of many childhoods.

“I cried,” Lambert Senior Skyer Perry stated when answering how she felt about his departure. “ I cried like a little baby.”

Perry also expressed what MatPat meant to her childhood. She is an avid fan of the horror genre and holds a love for anything related to video games. Growing up, MatPat’s videos were the perfect combination for her to explore her interests.

“His involvement in my childhood really taught me to appreciate wanting to know more about things,” Perry said. “Kind of like tuning into that curiosity or more creative side.”

In his video, MatPat describes his departure as similar to that of his becoming a grandpa. He says while you won’t see him as often, he will still be associated with the channel.

“I think I’m kind of evolving into a grandpa Pat,” Matpat describes. “Just like a grandparent, you don’t get to see me all the time, and I don’t get to see you all the

time. Maybe we call and talk to each other every once in a while, but at the end of the day, Grandpa loves getting to see you.”

With this note, the future of Matpat’s channels remains uncertain. Only time will tell how the creative direction of upcoming videos will go.

“I’m really excited to see what he’s gonna do,” Perry said. “It’s just depending on what it is, I may or may not be too keen on it.”
