The National Basketball Association (NBA) Playoffs just kicked off this past week, with the early slate games providing thrilling finishes and lopsided victories. The playoffs have brought intriguing matchups, such as the Knicks vs. Hawks and the Timberwolves Vs. Nuggets, to name a few. All together, it will be exciting to see which team comes out on top.
The NBA Playoffs consist of four rounds, with a total of 16 teams participating: eight from the Eastern and Western conference. The series is also a best of seven format. Currently, the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are the reigning champs, seem to be the favorites. They are led by players Shai Gilgeous Alexander (SGA), Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, along with others. However, they’re bound to face some tough opponents down the line. For instance, if the Los Angeles Lakers pass the second round and if the Denver Nuggets make it to the Western Conference Finals, which is the third round, the Thunder could potentially be knocked out of the playoffs.
“I think LeBron is the biggest X-Factor in this year’s playoffs,” junior Akili McLeod claimed. “He’s potentially on his retirement tour, and he has a chip on his shoulder.”
Some other notable headlines so far have been the grand accomplishments of Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama just won the first ever unanimous Defensive Player of The Year, and surpassed NBA Legend and Hall of Famer Tim Duncan for the most points (35 points) for a Spurs’ player’s debut in the playoffs. Additionally, the number eight seed Orlando Magic defeated the number one seed Detroit Pistons in a shocking victory: the game ended with a score of 112-101 and has made NBA fans wonder if the Pistons are really built for a playoff run. Some other notable dark horse candidates to make a playoff run include the Atlanta Hawks, the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Lakers (as long as LeBron can hold down the fort until Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic come back from injury).
“I think that the Hawks can make a deep playoff run because of the team’s versatility,” McLeod explained.
The NBA Finals take place sometime in early June, and usually carry on for one week. However, with the series being so close early on, the finals may be pushed back. With all of that being said, it will be intriguing to see who comes out on top: will it be the reigning champs, the OKC Thunder, or will a new team be crowned champion?
