In a surprising move, Lambert High School has announced the changing of its mascot from the Longhorns to the Slugs. The decision was made after months of discussion and a vote by the student body. According to the school’s principal, Dr. Gary Davison, this decision was not taken lightly.

“We understand that the Longhorns have been a significant part of Lambert high school’s history, but we also wanted to take into consideration the feelings of our student body and community,” Dr. Davison said at a press conference on March 8, 2023

Many students and alumni were initially hesitant about the change, as the Longhorns have been the school’s mascot since its inception in 2009. However, after much debate, it was decided that the Slugs would better represent the school’s unique personality and spirit.

“Slugs are often underestimated and overlooked, but they possess a quiet strength and tenacity that we want to embody as a school,” said Davison. “We want students to know that even if they don’t make the winning touchdown or earn the highest test score, they still have value and worth.” The decision to embrace the Slug mascot has also been seen as a nod to Lambert’s commitment to environmentalism and sustainability. Slugs are known for their ability to break down and compost organic matter, making them a vital part of a healthy ecosystem.

“Lambert High School is surrounded by beautiful nature, and we want our mascot to reflect that,” junior class president Hafsa Mir said. “We want to show that we care about the environment and our responsibility to take care of it.”

The change to the Slug mascot has also given the school an opportunity to create a new identity for themselves. The school’s colors will remain black and red, but new logos and merchandise featuring the slugs will be available for purchase in the coming months.

“We’re excited to embrace this new chapter in our school’s history,” senior class president Max Chapa said. “We know that change can be scary, but we’re confident that Slugs will bring us together and represent who we truly are as a Lambert family.”

The change has been met with mixed reactions from the community, but the school’s administration believes that the new mascot will be embraced by students and supporters. The Slugs will make their debut at the first home football game next school year, and The Student Government Association (SGA) has already planned several events to celebrate the new identity.

“This is about more than just a mascot change,” newly appointed principal Mrs. Amanda Thrower said. “It’s about embracing who we are as a school and a community, and I couldn’t be prouder of our students and faculty for making this bold step forward.”
