Lambert’s Lady Longhorns Varsity softball team have been competing this season with their 11-11 record, and have put up a fight with every team they’ve faced. Recently, Lambert bounced back from several losses in their 8-0 domination against the Duluth Wildcats. This week the Longhorns had a series of wins, defeating West Forsyth twice and ending the week crushing Gainesville 16-1.

Hannah Cole, the team’s freshman pitcher, has made headlines this year. Cole shared her thoughts on the season so far.

“I think the season is going pretty well,” Cole explained, “We’ve won most of our games, but we’ve taken some tough losses.”

The girls have been working tirelessly this season, but are limited by their team’s age demographic. Cole expanded on the challenges her and her teammates have encountered this fall.

“We’re so young this year. We have so many freshmen and sophomores, and it’s hard because last year they had so many seniors.”

The all-star pitcher mentioned that they only have one senior on the team this year. Their losses reflect their youth and having to adjust with how one another contributes to the field. That didn’t last for long, however, “at the beginning [they] were pretty distant, but now that [they’ve] gotten to play together, [they’ve] all come together as a team.”

The longhorn girls are determined to make it far in the playoffs. With their newfound chemistry and fresh mindsets, they’re ready to tackle the rest of the season.

“Our goal is to make it as far in the playoffs, as far as we can go,” Hannah Cole remarked, “We practice all the time, we have games all the time, so we’re prepared for what’s to come.”

Although Cole considered the team’s youth to be a setback, it is also one of their biggest assets. Due to the team’s new additions, their opponents don’t know what to expect from the Lady Longhorns. All the girls are also immensely committed. Most of the players have expressed their plans to continue softball for the duration of their high school career. However, Hannah elaborated on what she considered to be their biggest strength,

“We have a lot of really good hitters in our lineup, so we can get the job done,” Hannah reassured.

With their intense practicing, conditioning, and outside-of-school experience, Lambert’s varsity softball team has strong players in all positions. Hannah Cole is one of their best pitchers, along with sophomore pitcher and center-fielder Courtney Sauer, catcher Sydney Chung, and Colleen Thomson, the team’s shortstop. Their impressive skill sets are responsible for the Longhorn’s victories, including their win against rival South Forsyth.

“The biggest highlight this season was when we beat South,” Cole expressed, “That was a big game and we beat them on our home field.”

The varsity softball team has experienced epic highs and lows this fall. They’re aware of their areas of improvement and are prepared to battle in the playoffs. Come support the Lady Longhorns for their game against the Denmark Danes Saturday, October 3rd, at 1 P.M. here at Lambert!
